Frequently asked questions

Getting started

You can refer yourself by phone, or you can be referred by your GP or consultant.

You tell me what's been happening, and I'll tell you whether vestibular rehab is likely to help. If it isn't the right thing, I'll say so.

Yes. All appointments are in your own home, across Worthing and the surrounding area. The areas page has the detail.

Sometimes. If dizziness comes on suddenly together with weakness or numbness, slurred speech, a drooping face, double vision or a sudden severe headache, call 999 straight away.

Your appointments

You'll be sent a link to some questionnaires to complete online. If you have difficulty using the internet, paper versions can be provided. Your answers are checked and clarified before a physical examination, including balance testing and examining how your eyes move. We then agree a treatment plan around the goals you want to achieve.

This depends on what's causing the problem, how long you've had it, and whether you have other problems that may complicate recovery, such as issues with your vision or the feeling in your legs and feet. For example, BPPV can usually be resolved in one treatment session. PPPD usually takes a minimum of six.

In most cases you'll be given an exercise programme to carry out on your own. Your sessions progress these exercises so they stay challenging enough for your progress to continue. The exception is BPPV, which usually needs hands-on treatment, but very few sessions.

Fees and insurance

The initial appointment of up to 90 minutes is £100, and follow-up sessions of up to an hour are £80. Full details are on the fees page.

I'm not registered with the insurance companies. However, some insurers will let you claim back fees you've paid, so please check with yours directly.

Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice are charged the full fee.

More information

The Association of Chartered Physiotherapists with an Interest in Vestibular Rehabilitation (ACPIVR) publishes information leaflets on BPPV, vestibulopathy (such as labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis), vestibular migraine, PPPD and Ménière's disease. You'll find them on the ACPIVR website. My conditions pages cover the main ones too.

Talk it through first

The first phone call is free. Tell me what's been happening and I'll tell you whether vestibular rehab is likely to help, before you book anything.
